Dr. Natarajan Vijayarangan directed this program.
The words Vande Mataram echoed through the streets of Chennai, as the students of Vijay Graded English School went on a procession carrying a 660-feet-long national flag, which they claim is the longest ever Indian national flag.
And they have even applied to the Guiness Book of World Records to prove that.
"It was our ma'am's idea to make this long flag. We all helped her and completed it and then took part in this procession. We are very happy to be a part of this feat. I also thank my teacher for giving me an opportunity to be a part of this event," M Nandhini, a student who took part in the procession, said.
The flag is a mathematical arrangement of 110 smaller flags, and about 150 students spent more than a month stitching the flags together to make one long flag.
While the students enjoyed the activity, the authorities succeeded in driving a shot of patriotism into the children.
"We wanted to start this because we wanted to create awareness and develop patriotism in people. People now don't even want to hoist the flag on August 15 and January 26. They don't want to be Indians, they want to be multinationals," a member of school management, Dr N Vijayarangan, said.
They performed it for the record books but as the cameras recorded their performance, whether the record books noted it too, remains to be seen.
The students walked through the streets of Chennai carrying the national flag on their shoulders for over two hours. They say that this is just to show that when the right time comes, they will be all set to shoulder the responsibilities of a true citizen of India.
