It was before the "revolution", the girl's family's fleeing Shanghai and before she left she gave the box to the boy, told him that her heart's in the box, and she'll come back to find him when everything settled down. He said he's not going anywhere, he'll wait for her right here, and then she boarded the ship. Little did they know that after things settled there were decades of isolation and neither of them would even know if the other person was alive, until the other scene.
