Obama speaks at NAACP 100 Year Anniversary.

.....Painting himself as the beneficiary of the NAACP's work, Obama cited historical figures from W.E.B. DuBois to Thurgood Marshall to explain how the path to the presidency was cleared by visionaries.
Obama's remarks, steeped in his personal biography as the son of a white mother from Kansas and black father from Kenya, challenged the audience — those in the room and those beyond — to take greater responsibility for their own future. He told parents to take a more active role and residents to pay better attention to their schools.
Rousing up a friendly crowd, Obama made his first speech so directly linked with race since he took office; the White House says he worked on it for about two weeks. Implicit in his appearance: He is seeking the backing of the powerful NAACP and its members for his ambitious domestic agenda.
The president said that in the current down economy, blacks are suffering high unemployment and are afflicted with more diseases but are less likely to own health insurance. He said that the African-American child is about five times as likely as a white child to be sent to jail.
Obama touted education as essential to improving the lives of all children. He said the state of schools is an American problem, not an African-American one.
"You know what I'm talking about. There's a reason the story of the civil rights movement was written in our schools. There's a reason Thurgood Marshall took up the cause of Linda Brown. There's a reason the Little Rock Nine defied a governor and a mob," Obama said. "It's because there is no stronger weapon against inequality and no better path to opportunity than an education that can unlock a child's God-given potential."

One more time, my point is that your comparison of teachers to police is not a good one. You have asked these questions before and I answered them. Michelle Rhee don't have to be a teacher to evaluate teachers. We have non techies evaluating techies everyday.

I'm sure many black women remain teaching in the school district. If black teachers are failing a high percent of the students, they should have walked on their own. BTW, I've taught at the college level.

  • @AfriSynergy Police men are employed to STOP CRIME!

    But, crime still exists!

Teachers can TEACH, but if the students don't go home and STUDY.

Michelle Rhee is not qualified to teach, how can she be qualified to evaluate teachers?

Bottomline: She fired OLDER, BLACK WOMEN and relaced them with YOUNGER, WHITE people! That is BLATANT RACISM!

What is she saying? That black women can't teach?

  • @MsJanetWood

There are always other factors when we look at it from the macro perspective. Police are not employed to teach people not to commit crimes but teachers are employed to teach. Again, Rhee's position was not to teach. There are some teachers who do very well with students in inner-city junior high schools, in spite of other factors.

  • @AfriSynergy So, how effective are the police working in Compton, Watts, or East L.A.? Crime is rampant!

Would you accuse them of not doing their job?

Or maybe, there are other factors involved?

I would love to see Michelle Rhee attempt to teach in an inner-city junior high school! The kids would eat her alive! Ha!

You don't have to be a teacher in order to be a Superintendent. Similar to a CEO of an IT company doesn't have to know the nuts and bolts of IT or educated specifically in IT. I agree, administrative salaries tend to be too much. It still revolves back to how effective are the teachers. This is the most important factor. If the younger ones are not effective, they too should walk.

  • @AfriSynergg Were the evaluations fair? Free of biases and prejudice? Were the evaluators competent?

The truth of the matter is that these teachers were let go because they were older and had gone up on the salary scale. Replacing them with younger inexperienced teachers would save the district a lot of money.

Why doesn't anyone talk about the over-paid administrators? Michelle Rhee made over a quarter of a million dollars per year! She wasn't even qualified to teach, let alone run a

  • @MsJanetWood

Good comments. However, it still comes back to how were the students doing, were they graduating and could they compete? If the teachers were black, white or other and the students were not proficient in sufficient numbers, this is a reflection on the teachers. Of course, there are other factors but the buck stops with the teachers.

  • BLATANT DISCRIMINATION AND RACISM!

Michelle Rhee and her so-called "Education Reform"! How can she evaluate teachers, if she's not even qualified to teach? She doesn't even have a teaching credential! The majority of the teachers she fired were OLDER, BLACK WOMEN with teaching credentials who had a vested interest in the community. She replaced them with YOUNG, INEXPERIENCED WHITE people with no credentials who were temporarily passing through!

What is the NAACP going to do about that?

  • The NAACP is racist just like Shirley Sherrod the black woman in charge if the USDA who discriminated against white people and believes the "white kind" is inferior. How come Black Supremacists are allowed to work in powerful government positions, like the mayor of Detroit, but the KKK can't?? Racist double standards suck
