from 1994's "Still in Hollywood"

Talk to me baby
Say something nice
Talk to me honey
I need your advice

Never my fortune
Never my fame
I don't wear diamonds
I don't drink champagne
Ive learned a lot that I don't want to know
Take me back to where we were so long ago

Take me down easy
Take me down slow
By the side of the road

Slow me down baby
Drive for a while
Pull over baby
Ive put on my miles

Were running and buzzing and talking about
All kinds of things I can do well without

Drive me to where we were so long ago
Bottle of wine and I'm ready to go
Lets have a drink to the car radio
By the side of the road

I can remember
Us laughing in bed
Hung over
Happy
And holding our heads

We didn't care about what people said
Its hard recognizing a dream thats gone dead
Me and my liquor
Feeling alone

Nowhere to go
So I guess Ill go

You were the first and the only one
By the side of the road
By the side of the road
By the side of the road

  • A true story:

I never tattooed her name on me because her face is tattooed on my heart and in my mind. I did however have the title of this song tattooed on my leg one lonely night in Acapulco when missing her simply got the best of me. I'll never forget the night we sat on the 'side of the road' for hours and just sort of fell in love by accident.

  • This is a great song from a great album by a great band that should be known for a lot more than just "Joey".

  • You're a lucky guy ruben - Ms. Napolitano is incredibly talented and soulful. I accompanied a friend who interviewed her many years ago - and she's one of a kind.

  • Ahhhhh this is gold! reminds me of early rilo kiley!!! Anyone? Anyone??

  • Johnette is one of the best singer songwriters ever. She can illustrate feelings and paint emotional tapestries with just the english languae as her pallette. I love this song... I've lived this song...

  • This was thier best album in my opinion...as far as a complete album

  • Thank you for posting this. I was here surfing for Lucinda Williams "Side of the Road", and found this also. Great tune -- now I have to look up more Concrete Blonde as well.

  • @rubenporras Good story man. I believe this is a wonderful song to remind you about the good things about one's ex.

  • There's no way to stereotype Concrete Blonde.
