This is my little Widgitmaster machine milling out a small SMD ring oscillator board. I'm using a Wolfgang engineering spindle and a 15degree engraving bit.

The GCode was generated with pcb2gcode from Gerber files made with gEDA PCB and GSchema. The whole board was completed in under ten minutes running at 600mm/min. The solder took considerably longer!

  • Machine was about $1.2K AUD (when the AUD vs USD was like 75c), electronics I built myself (around $250AUD in parts), the three steppers about $60AUD each. EMC2 is free, and most the software I use is open source, but I did spend $600 AUD on VCarve Pro because it's just so good at engraving signs and doing 2.5D layouts, nothing open source could reliably and easily do it.
