Luna 9 (occasionally called Lunik 9 or Lunnik 9) was an unmanned space mission of the Soviet Union's Luna program. On February 3, 1966 the Luna 9 spacecraft was the first spacecraft to achieve a lunar soft landing and to transmit photographic data to Earth. For unknown reasons, the pictures from Luna 9 were not released immediately by the Soviet authorities. Instead, the Jodrell Bank Observatory, which was monitoring the craft, noticed that the signal format used was identical to the internationally-agreed system used by newspapers for transmitting pictures. The Daily Express rushed a suitable receiver to the Observatory and the pictures from Luna 9 were decoded and published world-wide.

  • I don't think its possible for a Soyuz rocket to deliver that kind of a payload to lunar orbit or surface.

  • @linghun No Soyuz rocket, is Molniya 8K78M. see in website wikipedia "Luna 9". In website astronautix "Luna E-6" a "Molniya 8K78

  • Another great Orbiter video, Rseferino: keep it up! How about a couple of abort sequences for Apollo and the Shuttle?

  • @Senor1Droolcup Yes. I'm planning one with a shuttle RLTS.

  • @rseferino1 I agree. Only Molniya M rockets was used for sending probes in middle of Luna programme operated by Soviet Union. Soyuz rocket could only launch the manned spacecraft into Low Earth Orbit.

  • This is my very favorite of all of your videos. I could never find any good material on how Luna 9 actually touched down, and assumed it was through some jettisoned retro-rocket assembly of some sort. Glad to see I was right!

  • How about inter planetary travels with a Space Shuttle? With additional thrust rockets and fuel of course.

  • Wonderful job celebrating a stunning engineering and scientific achievement.

I would also like to congratulate you on your excellent choice of music and the effort put to synchronising it with the action and emotion. Bravo.

  • epic

    what song?
