In this video, I show how starting with a monochromatic underpainting will help establish values and capture the pattern of light and shadow in preparation for adding local color. Even though this approach is most often used in the studio, it can also be used outdoors, en plein air.

  • The bright green you added at starting at 5:18 in the video seemed quite a bit lighter in value than the darker under painting. Nevertheless, thank you much for adding this video. You are an amazing artist.
