TEN FOR CARTER
In honor of Elliott Carter's one hundredth birthday
Composer Elliott Carter has said, "What I do is making America." The rich variety and dynamic movement of American life is reflected in Carter's music, and we've commissioned ten short piano works from ten composers, celebrating his century of innovation and creativity. Performed by pianists Marilyn Nonken and Stephen Gosling, these pieces pay tribute to Elliott Carter, "still America's most promising young composer."
Ten for Carter includes music by Milton Babbitt, Uri Caine, Jeffery Cotton, Alvin Curran, Jeremy Gill, Jennifer Higdon, Jeffrey Mumford, Augusta Read Thomas, Maurice Wright, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.
All this, and a special treat! The virtuoso members of the Network for New Music Ensemble perform chamber music by Carter: his trio Con Leggerezza Pensosa, an homage to Italo Calvino; Steep Steps, for solo clarinet; Figment no. 2: Remembering Mr. Ives, for solo cello; and excerpts from 4 Lauds, for solo violin.
