This version of the In Crowd was the backup group for Jon & Robin (Do It Again) on Abnak records in the late 60's. They also cut a few fine singles on their own for the label.

"Hangin' Tree" didnt do much nationally, it only bubbled under on Billboards Hot 100. But it did very well in the Southwest. I heard it received a lot of airplay on KEEL in Shreveport, KDOK in Tyler and KLUE in Longview. You'll see a scan of a 1968 KEEL survey with an ad for it, along with a national advertisement and also a stock copy, a gold vinyl promo and a Canadian pressing of the record.

It's never been reissued on CD, but I hope Sundazed records, who now own the Abnak catalog will put together a comp of the label's non-LP singles someday.

  • Ahhh - this track is really good. I love this raw and honest garage rock from the 60s. My hobby is to rediscover all those great bands from the 60s that didn´t "broke through". Listen (youtube) for example to THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". Awesom - with a bloody driving beat. And why no The Golliwogs and the track "Tell me". Check up the singer..........yes, it´s him!

  • Do you have "Hey Girl" by Jon & Robin with The In Crowd?

  • Anyone Got "Big Cities" by this Group? It charted top 40 here in Ottawa, Canada

  • This is not the same group that did "Questions and Answers" on the Viva label. That In Crowd was from Los Angeles. In fact both records got played in D/FW area on KLIF (Dallas). When the D.J.'s at KLIF intro'd the Viva single they called the artists "The L.A. In Crowd." The Abnak group was form Dallas and I believe 3 members joined the Five Americans when 3 originals (Ezell,Durrill and Grant left). The Dallas In Crowd also got local play with their cover of The Five Americans, "Big Cities."

  • This is the 1st time I hear it and I love it! Thanks for the post.

  • Is this the same group called the In Crowd who had a record called "Questions and Answers" in 1966?

  • My husband was the keyboard player... I lost all pix & records in a fire. I am so glad I found this ..thank you!!!

  • had a copy of this record....loved it! brole it somehow! never could find another copy......great song!

  • I have this 45! Too bad it was not in stereo.
