In our last part of lessons from South Africa elections we look at the advantages and disadvantages of proportional representation in the national assembly. Parties are allocated seats according to the number of votes won as opposed to citizens voting for mps directly. Parties give their lists of potential representatives to the electoral commission before the general election. Because ANC got only 264 seats out of 400 it means only those falling within that number from the top of the list will be mps.
