The XX Bomber Command headquarters was established at Kharagpur, India, in late March 1944 under the command of Brig. Gen. Wolfe. Four bases near Calcutta were set up to receive the B-29s, and the first plane arrived on April 2, 1944.
This video covers the constuction of runways in India to accommodate B-29s of the XX Bomber command for bombing raids on Japanese-held China and Southeast Asia. Includes scenes of B-29 crews, headquaters, tent camp, and day-to-day activities. Video shows aerial views of Chakulia, Kharagpur, Piardoba, and Charra airstrips.
@katavenger My father was also with this bomber group as a member of the signal corps. This film is amazing. I was looking for my father since his letters home indicate he was there the day they filmed. He passed away last June. Thanks for posting this clip.
