Earth = Air

Earth = Water

Earth = Fire

Though if you want to go into more details, Earth and Air are opposites; the same for water and fire. Their styles oppose each other in that water is gentle and free-flowing while fire is wild, forceful and hard to control. Air is adaptable and hard to hold hence the Airbenders style of evade and avoid while Earthbenders take things head on like rocks.

There really is no superior element. It's all about what style affects you most.

Though I myself prefer Firebending and the Northern Styles of Kung Fu, every type of bending was purposefully designed to be equal, none of them are truly superior to another.

@boolengleng Well, a lot of things can produce energy. It's the *heat* that makes the energy special.

@CochroachKappa Hmm. Since fire, heat and lightning all have one thing in common- energy it seems like firebending is more like "energy bending" I guess.

@boolengleng It probably has to do with Agni being an influence for fire-bending culture. Agni is the name of an Hindu deity who has 3 forms: sun, fire, & lightning. The inclusion of lightning as an aspect of fire-bending was probably just another nod to this. Feng Shui & Wicca also consider lightning an aspect of fire. Plus lightning is super-heated air particles, thus heat energy, which can be controlled by fire benders.

I gotta ask, how is it that firebenders have control over lightning? It doesnt seem like lightning is a form of fire... electricity is electricity and fire is fire. Anyone know?

oh and even though i am a preferred airbender, i take northern shaolin eagle claw in my spare time, so i understand what he is saying about it being strong and aggressive, but also at the same time it's not. its actually kinda cool to learn this type of kung fu, knowing that a lot of other martial arts descended from it. even though i just barely started my training, i know enough to name the moves they do in the show. and i know a bit of tai chi too. :D

although you're right on that one, Zhao is a bit out of his mind, the four elements are one and so the four nations are one as well.
