It can be great fun, and lots of information on the Internet covers HAM RADIO.
You do NOT need to know MORSE CODE anymore. The FCC changed the rules, so anybody (even a non-US Citizen) can get a US Ham Radio license (my 10 year old son passed the written test, and so can YOU!!)

Depends on propagation conditions, however with this set I have chatted from my station in the SF-Bay area to other stations in Australia, Japan, and Norway .. with only 15 watts of power .. .
