  • On Donald Smith from Chicago trumpeter Art Davis

"We always used singers, and we had a great singer, Don Smith, who was excellent. I hear he's still around and I always loved his singing. He made more a career from his piano playing and he's also a wonderflute player."

They studied together at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana under John Garvey.
