it was the wealthiest city on earth in 1965 so to say it was because of poverty is wrong it was because of the model cities program started by LBJ which tore down half the black nieghborhood

What a bunch of garbage showing that "Colored Only Entrance". That NEVER existed in Detroit, especially by 1967. They got that picture from the 1950's South.

I lived on these streets all of my life, and it wasn't as bad as some would make it out to be! Most of those killed in the riots, we either looting, or out during a fucking riot!! Boo fucking Hoo!! Nobody is trapped anywhere, unless you are lazy, and want to be handed a living, or you sell dope!! It's no better now that it's all black, and never will be! When blacks stop being racist, then things will improve!!

The problem then and now, as shown by the people interviewed, is a lack of education. The rioters started the destruction of Detroit and it has never recovered. The white flight that greatly ensued after the riots was to get away from this type of activity. The cops of D are now mostly black and the populace still burns down and commits atrocious crimes in the city. What is their excuse now? Take pride in your neighborhood and clean it up!

Why did they interview all of these younger people? There are still plenty of us around who were alive at the time and remember the riots first-hand. Not just something our grandmother told us about it.
