(Be sure to watch HD fullscreen) As part of World Environment Day, Pittsburgh breaks the world record for Largest Raft of Canoes/Kayaks.

The official count not yet released - but an estimated 1,800 took part in the event.

Kayakers launched their boats from downtown and formed a raft near Point State Park. Once arranged, each pulled up his or her paddle and held onto an adjacent boat for 30 seconds—long enough to satisfy the record's time requirement.

See everyone get completely drenched at 0:36.

Video by Randy Sargent and Paul Heckbert of GigaPan and Carnegie Mellon University CREATE lab. Thanks especially to Mark Susany and Heinz Field for letting us shoot from atop the scoreboard at Heinz Field.

  • Sun, Clouds, and Rain, yup thats Pittsburgh! Lovet his video!

  • I love this video! I was in there somewhere! After the rain came down, we paddled so fast to shore, only to tip over when the nice volunteer worker pulled a little too hard on my rope to my 'noe. Over we went, right on shore. But at that point, we were already drenched! I was surprised that the water came up to my chest only 6 foot off the shore! WHAT A DAY! WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY!. Was the official count 1619? I never did follow that up and find out how many in our glorious flotilla.

  • Yah! We did it with 1619 boats. Check out paddleatthepoint com memorabilia

  • @johnmoyer99 Seriously we can perceive ourselves totally different just watching ourselves sped up. Crazy/

  • ha! ... like insects! ...

  • This was so great...I could kick myself for not being a part of this! **KICK**

  • 0:35

  • haha the rain part at the end still makes me laugh so hard...we just beat the record and started to break away from the flotilla when theheavens just opened. I laughed the whole way to the ramp... perfect.
