This video explains how to determine the number of valence electrons an atom has, and how to use those valence electrons to create an electron-dot diagram. How it relates to the orbital (box) diagram is also included.

  • Mr. Rosengarten, I have a question. When you showed us the dot diagram for Sn, you showed it as containing two "s" electrons together, and the two "p" electrons in different orbitals. That's fine but why does the dot diagram for Carbon have all four of it's valence electrons in different orbitals allowing four covalent bonds, shouldn't the diagram be similar to the Sn?

  • @Jahmairiable It should be. Carbon's ground state dot diagram is the same as tin's, but when carbon bonds it forms a stable octet by exciting one of the paired s electrons to the next available p orbital, hence, one electron on each side. In this way, carbon shares four pairs of electrons with the atoms it bonds with. Tin forms mainly ionic bonds because it is a metal.

  • You just made me Ace a test. Thank you!

  • @DeathMetalMikey You aced it all on your own! You took the initiative to look for help. Give yourself the credit, and I wish you continued success!

  • what if it was something like CH3OH

  • THANK U SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am doing my chemistry via internet and your videos have been a life saver! Seriously, thank you so very much!

  • Hi

    Can you tell me

how electron is orbiting around the nucleus. is it clockwise or anti clockwise around the nucleus? i am much confused plzzzzz if it is clock wise then why it is so? and vice versa?

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! Now all the sublevels make sense (:
