Indonesia has a history of unrest and conflict but the world's third largest
democracy is now seen as one of the more stable countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Indonesian president Susilo Yudhoyono has invited representatives from 30 countries to the first Asian Democracy Forum on the island of Bali.

But as Step Vaessen reports, even some within Indonesia's government are arguing that democracy comes at an economic price.

  • @fazilnbira bacot gak jelas lu njing. dasar indon bangsa rendahan.

  • @malayneum hei hei, either your country too, punk ass. Lets see trough the forbes business website. Indonesia's richest man, was indonesian. (Aburizal Bakrie) and your malaysia's richest man. Chinese. AND LOOK, WE'RE INDONESIAN, AND WE DON'T MAKE ANY BORDERS BETWEEN US. NO MATTER THEY'RE CHINESE, JAVA, AUSTRONESIAN OR ELSE. THE SMARTER, THE WINNER. NOT LIKE YOUR COUNTRY, DIVIDED PEOPLE BY THEIR OWN RACE BACKGROUND. WHAT A RACIST COUNTRY YOU HAD.

  • iam not javanesse but i love and proud being indonesia?? in indonesia ... everybody can success if they are smart..no mather if he is java, chinesse, indian, malay, maluku, papua?? so please don't be so racist!! indonesia is not racist country...we live in harmony after 1998 tragedy..so just let us live in peace!!

  • It should be noted that historically, chinese indonesians are discriminated by the central government, they can't be government officials, just like Tamils in your country. That's why the overwheming majority of chinese indonesians are reluctant to work in public sectors, they prefer to be the businessman instead. For the javanese, not all javanese are robbers, only a small amount of them who work as high officials in the Capital City. Most javanese are just farmers & transmigrants in Indonesia.

  • Good point. That's why most Indonesians from the Soeharto era to nowadays are strongly anti-communists...

  • However, most Indonesians will agree that communism gave Indonesians bad records by three times (1927, 1948, 1965) conducting bloody coup d'etat. If they are not to blame, then at least they always induced and involved in those.

  • proud my ass. you people are just puppets to the ethnic javanese. the only rich people in indon are the chinese and the javanese who robbed and plundered from other ethnic provinces. nationalism and military are the greatest weapon of the javanese. without both of them the javanese have NOTHING to keep you in line.

  • How high is your education bro? You should read history before you even question the quality of indonesian education. I don't know where are you come from, but at least i have gut to tell you that i am proud of being an indonesian.
