This is a blues song like Moon Mullican's "Worries on my mind". True love and then let down.

There's a dark undercurrent to this old song. The 'bunch of thyme' was a folk euphemism for innocence/maidenhead/virginity
. This is what was 'stolen' by the sailor. However, the nasty little story doesn't end there. The 'sailor gave to her a rose, a rose that never would decay'. This was the 'devil's rose' - a euphemism for syphillis, at that time incurable. This isn't a romantic love song, but a coded warning! -
He gave me a beautiful rose.
I let him have my time.
It is precious. So is he.
Some things are meant to be
not for just a time, but eternity.
Thank you for this most tender live performance of Foster & Allen.
My heart is applauding!
With love from my fair garden
