Can whiplash cause you to suffer pain in your head?
In the UK hundreds of thousands of vehicles use the road systems every day and largely do so without incident. However, if you are involved in a car accident and suffer a whiplash injury, can this also lead to head pain?
Circumstances of a whiplash accident
The most common cause of a whiplash accident is a rear end shunt. Whilst stationary at a junction another vehicle drives into the back of your vehicle. The process of the injury is that you are pushed forward and your body starts to move forward until the seatbelt starts to restrain you. When the seatbelt restrains you, your head -- which is not restrained -- continues to move forward until it reaches its extreme range of movement and snaps back against the seat. It is this violent throwing forwards and backwards which overstretches your neck muscles and causes whiplash injury. However, can it also cause head pain?
Whiplash head injury
It is a frequent side effect of whiplash that people do experience headaches and head pains. It can be a similar pain to a migraine, causing severe pain. This can be due to the nerves in your neck causing the pain, or simply the fact that your head has been violently shaken.
Other symptoms may include shoulder and back pain along with dizziness and giddiness.
What should you do if you have had head pain?
You should immediately visit your local hospital Accident & Emergency department or your General Practitioner for a thorough medical examination. They will ensure that you have not sustained a serious injury. If the hospital are concerned they may carry out a CT or MRI scan to fully assess the impact of your head injury. By and large, the injury will not be too severe and you should make a full recovery within a week or two as regards your head pain. Neck pain may continue for some months or even years.
What should you do next?
If you have been involved in a non-fault car accident and have suffered pain you should seek immediate advice from a specialist accident claims solicitor. They will help you to claim compensation and should ensure that you keep 100% of your compensation with no deductions.
Summary
Whiplash can indeed cause you to suffer pains in your head. Early medical and legal advice will ensure that you are properly looked after.
