  • For the record, Thomas Erskine was a SCOTTISH composer. Indeed, he was the sixth Earl of Kellie. Born in Fife, he was known locally as 'Fiddler Tam'.

  • @AML2000 It makes sense that some of the best English composers would have been knowledgeable about the latest European trends. Such composers would have attended key concerts and studied key scores. Admittedly, it would have been difficult to keep up with trends even in London.

  • The "Sturm und Drang" influence of the Mannheim school is very evident here. It's interesting to see that some native British composers of the 18th century were knowledgeable about the latest European trends of composition. I see the Erskine was a pupil of Johann Stamitz the Elder.
