For a reasonable explanation of the Battle of Agincourt watch battlefield detectives, very interesting indeed as to why it was such a monumental victory for the English.

@ephabouyed The reason the English wear no armour is for symbolism rather than realism. In the play the English are portrayed as being weaker and poorer than the French so that when they win the battle the English victory looks glorious and it makes the French's defeat not just bad but also embarressing (Shakespeare hated the French so this play is basically anti-French propoganda). In real life Henry V and the dismounted English Knight's and men-at-arms would have worn armour.

No armour for Henry V?

@TheChickadee8 Well one speech that may come close is Chamberlain's speech from the movie Gettysburg. You can find that on youtube.

The battle is brilliantly played (you can see the horror on the Englishs' faces as the French cavalry charges - indeed, this was the intented effect) and brilliantly filmed. It would be so much better if only King Henry would wear at least a helmet and the 'tabards' and surcoats were properly embroidered with arms. Whilst the arms of England on Henry's surcoat are perfectly displayed, methinks the other nobles should wear their arms as proper surcoats, not just embroideries of the escutcheons.

@Gwid01 Fortunately, the late Malgibson won't be doing any attempts at Shakespeare, or anything else for that matter. He should've stuck to washing-machine commercials.

@drose5200 Speaking of Olivier, I wonder if anyone will ever even remember Mel Gibson's attempt to do Shakespeare. (An actor should know his limitations). This is brilliant acting and every scene has been adapted so perfectly from the original text. One of our all time fave films. Branagh was made to do this role. I would love to see him top this, for that would be something truly amazing. (Sorry, my wife was a film student... lol)
The St. Crispins Day speech is unmatched in any movie I've ever seen- he pulls it off with pure brilliance- this is possilbly the best redention that any actor has ever done of this work. Shakesphere would be very proud!

This version of the speech by Branagh's is my absolute favorite! As much as I liked Olivier's work, I'm not as fond of his version of St. Crispins Day (I prefer his Hamlet to his Henry V -- though he probably resembled the real Henry V more than Branagh)...
