You can determine the facts for the universe you are creating on a show. Suffice to say Smallville didn't stick to it because on previous occasions when the Legion Ring was used you couldn't meet yourself like was done here.

This has got to be one of the most fucked-up time explanations ever...
Yes, meet your future self. Your future self is aware that you are here because he has already gone through it, however, that also means that in order to go through it, he had to go through it, becoming Clark A. However, the Clark that is experiencing this, Clark B, must be inspired by Clark A to BECOME Clark A, meaning that somehow Clark A existed before Clark B could meet with him, presenting a hallway paradox.
