Abscessing is generally a good because, the hoof is repairing its self. Behavioral problems from hoof discomfort or chronic lameness can be eliminated through abscessing after hoof rebalancing.

Notify your hoof care specialist when your horse abscesses. Hooves should be trimmed and balanced regularly. Radiographs can help with reoccurring abscesses, there can be abnormal causes.

Of the hundred plus lame and laminitic cases I've improved or returned to full use, eighty percent abscessed between one to five times over three years. My services are generally used after; no improvement or recommended to be destroyed. The horse in this video has not abscessed since, his behavior did improve.

Of the lame cases I didn't receive, none of them improved with other treatments and ninety percent where destroyed. I'm always researching!

  • No!!! Abscessing is not good! The only reason an absessing takes place is because there is an infection...how is an infection good? Plus, when a horse is absessing, it should be very closely watched and cared for with foot wraps, ichthamal to draw out the infection, guaze, and even leg support wraps if it's bad enough. People, if your horse is crippled, do NOT just send him out to the pasture OR destroy him! Take care of him!

  • Owch my coronary band hurts! lol

  • first of all abcesses are not good , i have been a horseshoer for 20+ years and i have seen many horses crippled for life because of uninformed do gooders like these people giving out poor advice if you have an abcess in a horses hoof , take him to a vet or competent farrier

  • @DJtigren Abscesses rupture only thru soft tissue. Good quality wall has nothing to do whether it drains or not.

  • This is a GREAT video! This information is correct! Make him comfortable with pain meds if that helps you get over your horse's abscess, but leave him alone and he will do just fine. Digging and you only add a wound to a hoof that is trying to heal from the abscess. Abscess don't rupture thru wall, only soft tissue. Properly trimmed and rehabbed hooves will not abscess as often as flared hooves due to incorrect trimming and/or neglected hooves.

  • Wow, this is actually an interesting video! Neat how you made it seriously funny as well as able to convey information! Thumbs up!

  • The information you are stating about are inaccurate. the abscess could be from may different reasons foreign body, puncture, lamanitis. I personally have treated hoof abscess on my own horses. One can leave the abscess to pop on its own BUT their my be an underlying reason behind the abscess. And they are EXTREMELY PAINFUL to the horse. Some abscess need to be opened to allow for the drainage because they are not able to drain on their own due to good hoof wall quality. It could be laminitis.

  • hahahaha i love this video!! its awesome :D

  • mmm I agree that sometimes this is the best action. However, abscesses are so painful for horses, so in the case of a sub solar abscess I reckon sometimes it is better to lance it, let it drain, maybe witht he help of a poultice and then the horse has immediate relief. my farrier just lances and poultices it and puts the shoe back on with a leather pad to protect the exit site from contamination and the horse is back in work a day later !
