I was born on the island in 1990 and moved out off the island in 1996 when the Coast Guard closed down. I went to school there at P.S. 26 in the year 1995-1996. Riding the ferry was my brother's least favorite part, but I didn't mind it then.

Man talk about a trip down memory lane!!!? I miss this place BIG TIME. Lived there from 1973-1977 when my Dad was stationed there. Lived Bldg. 12 Sec. Q/5. Went to PS26. Bro went to La Salle and sis went to Cathedral. Great to see it again after all these years. Best place on earth.

I was stationed there in 1989/1990 and although I finally had the opportunity 17 years later to visit one August day in 2007, it's not the same as waking up in the morning and seeing the Statue of Liberty facing you head-on outside your bedroom window. No real estate in the world offers that view.

I rode this ferry just about everyday for one reason or the other.I was stationed on GI from 1973 until 1989. What I wouldn't give to go back and live those days.
