I was in my early 20s when she won the title. I never paid attention to these things, except that they made a big deal of it because she was black. I was also a subscriber to Penthouse, which ran the completely innocent & artistic photos.....that pageant officials used as an excuse to strip her of her crown. I'm SO happy that she went on to have such a brilliant career as the MOST talented singer/actress EVER to emerge from that Miss America crap.

@195511SM You ARE spot on about her probably being very talented singer, and hands down, the most SUCCESSFUL commercially. As far as acting he goes, we also have Catwoman and Barnaby Jones actress Lee Merriweather, the first to be crowned on tv nationally and live. Really though, Vanessa was the BOMB as Wilhelmina in Ugly Betty; think she found a niche there!

@195511SM You're dead wrong about the pageant officials taking advantage of the photo scandal in order to dethrone her; it's  WELL documented that the Miss America org., relying heavily on corporate sponsorships for, among others, the scholarships, was threatened by a good amount of those corp's that they would end all ties to the pageant b/c of bad publicity those corp's would receive if she didn't resign; Then Executive director, Al Marks, gave this reply in an interview.

They never mention her being biracial because she is a Black woman born to Black parents, are many others. Due to fame, people want to attach claim to her. Blacks did not make the one drop rule and could not legally call themselves anything more than what they do. As a result of slavery, Black person in the US havemulti-racial lineage, but people only want to acknowledge that it the person is famous.
