If you read 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, Paul is speaking figuratively. Starting at verse 24, Paul is talking about the race that we run. He's not literally talking about beating himself. It's self-discipline, not self-flagellation.

Joseph was Jesus' father. Every Christian knows that "brothers" and "sisters" don't ACTUALLY mean BLOOD brothers and sisters. Any person who grew up without their blood father around can attest to the fact that a father has nothing to do with blood relation.
