Smt. Kankana Banerjee ( Raag- Bhairavi -Baaju Bandh)

Since the early days, Kankana has come a long way. To date, she has participated in prominent Music Conferences all over India and abroad much to the admiration of music lovers. In India, Kankana's performances stretch from major cities like Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore, Madras, Punjab, Lucknow, to the other smaller towns like Hyderabad, Poona, Amaravati, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Vrindaban, Etawah, Kanpur, Agra, Allahabad, Banaras, Jubbalpur, Pandarpur, Vidar, Nagpur, Valsar, Jamshedpur, Gulberga, Ranchi and Indore (birth place of her Ustad Amir Khan). It was a sad twist of fate that Indore invited her to sing only as late as March, 1974 when her Ustad was no more.

Today she has to her credit regular performances on a global platform, mainly in the United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh and many other countries.

Kankana has released several independent recordings in Audio CD's, Records and Audio Cassettes . To mention a few, the famous Darbari Kanara 'Tarana' of Amir Khusrau, in HMV studio, at Bombay. It was recorded for the album "Multifaceted genius of Amir Khusrau", published on the occasion of the 7th Centenary celebration of the genius of Amir Khusrau. Kankana was subsequently guided by Pdt. Pratap Narain, of the Mewati Gharana and has now established herself as one of the leading exponents of classical music that India has ever produced. She is the recipient of the Kala Saraswati, Andhra Ratna Award which is one of the most prestigious awards from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Wish I were present for this Mehfil.Remember Kankanaji had performed in Sawai Gandharva Mahotsava in 1978 for the first time.Was having coffee outside at 330 a.m.Kankanaji started Bairagi.Her Sa was so powerful that I came running in to listen to her.After that Have listened just today to her melodious voice.
