While I never throw garbage on the floor, and likewise teach my kids the same, I wouldn't have picked up the bottle. Why would I? I don't know if it's dirty, what it has touched etc. I think picking up garbage from the floor with your hands is just plain gross, unless you have a sink you can wash your hands immediately after.
