Some clips from Tuesday's coverage of the Swine Flu outbreak, broadcast on Canada's CTV Newsnet. In my opinion, the first decent commentary aired on the Swine Flu 'pandemic'.

Dr. Niel Rau makes the important distinction (apparently lost on the WHO) between the rate of spread of a virus, and it's mortality - the rate at which it causes serious illness and death.

The swine flu outbreak occurred in Southeast Mexico, where health care access and record keeping - let alone the monitoring of trends - barely exist. This outbreak has been going on since AT LEAST last December, and hundreds of thousands of Mexicans - if not millions - have presumably already been infected. That means the 200 or so deaths are NOT out of the 2000 or so infections the Mexican government is aware of, but out of the two million or more people who may have been infected so far. All of those people either went to the doctor and were not recognized as having swine flu, or more likely just waited until the symptoms passed, as almost everyone in Mexico does.

This is probably the key to understanding the mystery of why so many people seem to have died in Mexico but nowhere else. A large number of undetected infections that lead to a small PROPORTION of serious illnesses can still produce a noticeable number of deaths. Because the mortality rate doesn't figure into the WHO's definition of a pandemic, they now prepare to move to a "Level 5 alert", even as evidence continues to accumulate from around the world that almost no one dies from this strain of swine flu.

Assuming a mortality of 0.01% - typical for annual flu outbreaks - America would not likely see it's first fatalities due to swine flu until 10,000 or more cases exist in the U.S. Given the popularity of Mexico as an American tourist destination, that number of cases may already exist. So expect a lot more 'news' about the number of detected infections in the US increasing - given that until this week, almost no one was being tested for swine flu. Also, expect many more false and misreported cases like the two phony deaths in L.A. on Tuesday, or of the Mexican child who happened to die on U.S. soil now being reported as America's first fatality.

Now, it is puzzling why so many of the deaths that have been documented in Mexico are among 15 to 45 year-olds, and this bears monitoring and research. But the idea that anyone is going to stop this virus from spreading, or that anyone will even really care when it does spread, is leading to an ENORMOUS waste of resources, energy, and attention to the real risks before us.

The mainstream media, Rumsfeld and the Tamiflu people, dust mask hawkers, unscrupulous politicians like Michele Bachmann, and short-selling scumbags like this guy are laughing all the way to the bank...

People profiting from the needless spread of panic are beneath contempt.

Rough translation of the opening paragraph...
