  • This looks like it has some Chinese "Hakka" system influence.

    Some Hakka systems are,Bak Mei,Hakka Crane,Chow Gar Mantis,Juk Lum Mantis,Southern Dragon.Just to name a few

  • I concur - although Matayoshi was never able to accurately describe the exact origins of Kingai Ryu

  • I believe this is the Kingai-ryu version of Sesan.

  • Okinawan Karate has close roots to Chinese Boxing. I noticed the Kangai-ryu form has elements that look like Shisochin, and Seisan and many others I can think of.

  • what are the names of all the katas as my wee bhoy is struggling to get the name of it hes a white and yellow belt but learning lots of katas the last one he done was one were the hand go to the ground and u move onure tiptoes

  • there is no other like matayoshi , beautiful kata, we miss him too much.

  • Outstanding a/v document of a legendary and enigmatic figure. I really dig this kata, PM Sensei. Thank you!

  • I'm not McCarthy Sensei, although I've had the rare opportunity to work with him twice. I have trained both Uechi and Goju, and have taught both.

    * Mattson's Uechiryu Karate Do suggests that Kingai Ryu is an antecedent to Goju.

    * Miyagi and company closed the fists on the Sanchin they brought back from China. We don't know what the "origins" of Goju looked like.

    * Patterns of movement look more Goju to me, although I do see Pangainoon hands throughout.

    Things evolve. It's a "cousin".

  • McCarthy Sensei,

Would you say that some of the elements of this kata are contained within Pangai-Noon gong fu, specifcially Uechi Ryu? I see elements of Uechi Sanchin, Seichin Seisan, Sanseiryu and possibly Kanshu in this kata.

  • Good stuff. You should have shared this when you came to visit! ;-)
