The demonstration, on the other hand, allows home-owners to be informed of the choices that comes into building design (many buldings are self-designed) and what points to check with builders. It also shows that simple, non-expensive improvements can protect buildings and lives. Finally, because the building collapse will damage and affect other buildings in the community, this is an issue not only for individual households but also on a community and national level.

While the demonstration is pseudo-science, the buildings, built in 1:10 scale, are constructed by masons who usually build real houses. The structures are constructed from sractch, with each brick made from scratch and metal reinforcements applied. The difference is, masons are taught to avoid "short-cuts" and supposedly technique that allows them to save money. These misconceptions are dispelled.

This is a demonstration put on by the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NGO) in Nepal to coincide with the Earthquake Safety Day on 16 January to commemorate the day of the Great Nepal-Bihar Earthquake of 1934. This day is observed with a host of activities such as school children essay, art and poetry competitions, national meeting and rally, symposium, earthquake safety exhibitions and the popular shake table demonstration.
