  • No. 'Food in the ring' is NOT a disqualification. If it were, and you wanted someone to get DQ'd, you could toss it in as they walked by. HAVING food (and getting caught) in the ring is a DQ.

And if a dog happens to choke on nothing while in the ring, would you DQ?

  • The judge said if a dog vomits or spits anything up, its an NQ. Same as if a dog eliminates in the ring, its an NQ.

  • This was a hard lesson, but I guarantee you will never do it again. I was working on a 199 and HIT when I tripped on the mat coming back from the down stay and my dog popped up from the down and I NQ'ed him. To this day, I lift my feet really high when I return to my dog!!

  • OMG!! Yes some lessons are learned the *very* hard way! Apparently, my misfortune with the treat has really run its course because all the people at the shows still talk about it and warn everyone to make sure their dog has swallowed before going into the ring!

  • Ah! Well that is correct. But 'food in the ring' wasn't a sentence, and made no sense. I heard of someone whose dog vomitted in the ring, but they caught the vomit and put it in their pocket, and so were not dq'd. Vomit has to land in the ring...now if your dog pee'd...hm...

  • yeah that's what this judge said too.

  • Yes, It is. According to AKC regulations, food in the ring (even if the dog chokes on it) is an automatic NQ. I was told this by another judge when I gave my guy a tidbit of food right before going into Utility. He told me to be careful because if the dog spit it out or choked on it, it would be an automatic NQ.

  • Unless you brought this food into the ring, the judge is confused. 'Finding food in the ring' is NOT a disqualification.
