The Causes and Effects of Acidic Precipitation

Acid rain is when acid or acid forming pollutants are deposited in the atmosphere which then descend from the atmosphere onto the earth's surface. This can happen by precipitation, fog, gases, or dry particles. Sulfur Dioxide and Nitric Oxide are usually emitted from factories. This, along with chemical reactions in the atmosphere, turn the pollutants into Sulfuric acid and Nitric acid. For the most part if occurs downwind and eastward of heavily industrialized areas. Consequences included increased concentration of aluminum in the soil resulting in nutrient deficiencies in forested areas. Also, it raises the pH levels in bodies of water making it uninhabitable for organisms dependent on that body of water. With high levels of pollutants in our society, it is an increasing difficult problem to deal with. Any efforts to slow down global warming will only help to reduce to the occurrences of acid rain and its long-lasting effects.
