Nice rig,i bought mine from a local ham around 12 days ago.

I noticed on the box it mentions a programmable tone function,but i cant find anything about it in the manual.

Do you have any ideas?

Think you'll find that is the CTCSS tone. Unless you intend to use 10m repeaters it wont be much use. I'm not sure if the Ranger needs a seperate CTCSS option board to be fitted or whether it has an 88Hz tone as standard.

@peacockealot If you buy it new then its a dual band,,12 and 10 meter radio, if you want to use it on 11 meters it's best to have it tuned up specifically for 11 meters.. 26-28mhz, otherwise it will be down on receive..

Decent performing radio, easy to mod to cover 24-32mhz but is a bit deaf on the upper and lower limits, needs to be balanced out to stretch its receive but there will always be a compromise.

Bland cold and clinical design means they can be picked up fairly cheaply secondhand.

Put it this way, you can happily leave it on the roof of your car overnight and have no worries about anyone taking it:)

I had one and it worked pretty well, tuned it for max performance on 10 meters.

Does the radio cover 11m straight out of the box or does it need modifications?

Everyone seems to enjoy slagging these radios off, but truth is if you can be bothered to get these properly aligned, there great radios, I've had mine half a year or so now running with an Astatic D104M, and its rocks, yes for looks not everyone's cup of tea but very stable in operation, just wish Ranger at source would quieten down the noise on SSB, rather than leaving it to the owner to sort.

I have a very faulty one of these I have been trying to find the time to mend for about 4 years!!!
