@BrambleH . Soon all trains will have an info system, it will be mandated from 2015. The legal minimum announcements is current station, next station, and destination. There are also various safety announcements that must be made as well. So i'm afraid your blisfull silent journey won't last long!

These routes remind me of how limited our starfish-like rail system is.

Yeah. I agree. If I'm totally open though, it might be useful for blind people who don't have carers. But I don't see many blind people without carers, so...

I agree. The First great western trains don't have audio, and when i first travelled on an SWT train I thought how it was good idea that the announcement tells you the station your at, but you can just as easily look out the window at the signs displaying the station name..

It's good that they announce them quickly, so that the voice doesn't drone on when it doesn't need to. Everyone knows where the train goes anyway and honestly, I say that there should be no audio announcements, as it utterly disturbs the peace. But

I know. If they're worried about missing it, they should do what I do. Get on in the first coach, then walk down the inside of the train to an empty one.

I left on the platform that Juniper is on in 1998 in a 4-CIG bound for Reading. On the way out we raced a Brussels bound Eurostar from just outside Waterloo to Vauxhall. Great vid

No its just the trains are too long down there :-). I walked a fair way down the platform to get to a carriage with not many people in. Most pile into the first coach they see nearest to them.
