This goes out to richebma, Rich from East Bridgewater, Mass.
The Videls were a Rhode Island-based trio, Peter Andreoli, Vincent Poncia, Jr., and Norman Marzano, who met in Providence and cut records initially for the local Rhody record label. They came to national attention when one of the Rhody releases, "Mister Lonely," got picked up by the JDS label based in New York. It became a modest hit in the spring of 1960, rising to No. 73

  • While often discussing this great music of ours with friends, I always called The Videls the most under rated group of the era. Just my opinion, of course, but I simply loved their sound. I was once told that they sang this song on Clay Cole's show in Providence, and then 'Mister Lonely' became a big hit, and Clay Cole went to NYC and became a legend.

Thanks dowopper 51 for the upload.

  • @recklessinPa Hmm I totally forgot about Clay Cole "Al Rucker and the Seven Teens" WJAR! I wouldn't doubt that they did sing on his show, there weren't too many RI groups around & the Videls would have been formed in that era. It would have to had been prior 59 though Clay went to NY in 1959? I never met any of them, however, I did work with a gentilmen named Kenny Hoxsie that knew them quite well, that was about the closest I ever got, LOL.

    BTW your very welcome!

  • the videls were great.my friends always tried to sing like them,so they left a legacy that still lingers.. clay cole got his n.y job after alan freed was shamefully fired..no one matches alan freed (my opinion)

  • Thanks for posting. Their follow-up "Now That Summer Is Here" is my favorite since it came out around my graduation. Never charted but big in Cleveland.

  • wow!!!! Hermosa baladita, clásica de los 50. sin duda una de mis favoritas.

  • Pete & Vinnie were in this group and later became The Tradewinds(New York's A Lonely Town and The Innocence(Mairzy Doats).

  • this song came out in 1960 during the summer.clay cole was a replacement figure for alan freed.cole could'nt hold a candle to freed.his show was dull and predictable.

such was the old fashioned moral t.v. code of the day.but alan freed was the king of rock and roll.alan freed was the first d.j to give black r&b groups exposure on television.the others never did or were very selective as to who they allowed to perform

  • Grew up in Providence and in 1960 I was 15 and always turned the radio way when any of the VIDELS songs came on. The Videls, Dion and the Belmonts, The Four Seasons. They don't make them like that anymore!! Thank God for U-Tube!!

  • Quintet

  • This song has a very " Tokens " sound ... They could have done everything the Tokens did ... I agree a very under appreciated group ... so glad You Tube allows us to relive those times .... it would be sad not to allow this music to be heaqrd and now appreciated !
