This is a documentary to raise awareness about the homelessness crisis in the city of New Haven, and the community-wide movement that emerged to address it.
This past year (2008), the city was forced to cut a large portion of the funds necessary to support the Overflow Shelter, a winter homeless shelter for single men. Without the Overflow, upwards of 125 men are in danger of freezing on the streets every night. The Overflow--which provides a warm bed, meals, and case management services--is more than just immediate relief. It is an integral part of the tapestry of social services in New Haven. It is a first crucial step for those struggling with homelessness toward a better life.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars are needed to support the Overflow, and this year, the greater New Haven community has formed an inspiring coalition to raise the money. The movement, known as Shelter Now, encompasses the efforts of City Hall, the United Way of Greater New Haven, the Yale-New Haven Hospital, the office of Representative Cam Staples, Yale University, the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project, and many more. Our community has made it clear that we are deeply concerned about the well-being of our neighbors.
As much success as has been had, the Overflow is still in need--if not for this year, for the future. Please join this fight to save lives and to preserve the basic human right of shelter.
