Peter Green's "Love That Burns" from the Mr. Wonderful LP. For me, the most difficult Peter Green solo to get right in all respects: tone, touch, timing - unbelievable! The guitar is a 2004 R9 "Real Feel" Historic. In 2003, Dave Carpenter of Music Machine custom ordered 25 (possibly 28?) R9s from Gibson, using the actual neck profile from his original '59 Burst, because R9s typically have necks that are nothing like a real '59. I can say, having owned 8 or so original '59s and having played many others, the neck is spot on. I've owned six other Historics and none of them had a neck that comes close to a real '59, or '58, for that matter. I changed the pickups to a pair of original PAFs: DW neck, magnet flipped or course, and Zebra bridge. I also changed to a Faber locking bridge, and Faber Tone-Lock Kit (locking tailpiece studs/spacers and aluminum tailpiece). For this video, I used a '59 tweed Fender Tremolux, which is pretty much a tweed Deluxe with a larger cabinet and tremolo added to the circuitry.

  • Can anyone tell me how a person would go about learning how to play the proper notes? Are there tabs or sheet music out there? How did Larry C learn? I have loved PG's playing for over 40 years, and now, nearing 60 myself, I would like to know how to play some of this great music. Not that I could ever approach it......

  • I can't read music and I only once saw a tab, but it didn't make sense to me, so the only way for me is to just listen and imitate. It was easier back in the day, because I could throw an LP on the record player, play it on 16 speed, which was close enough to half of 33 rpms that the key was still correct. Just listen and try to repeat what you hear.

  • absolutley wonderful tone and playing! Where did you get a faber bridge to fit historic posts? I thought the faber abr1 was intended as a direct replacement for NASHVILLE style bridges and that the post holes were too large for ABR-1 style studs?

  • Thanks! It's a new Faber LOCKING bridge, with 6-32 locking collars to fit ABR-1 posts. But, as of September 21, Faber will also have a non-locking ABR-'59 to fit ABR-1 posts.

  • can you tell me what your volume controls are set too,i can get close but not as close as your tone, thanks

  • Assuming your pickups are out of phase with each other (PG Mod), the volumes must be exactly, or very closely, matched to get the PG tone. If you move either of the volumes more than about 1 step from the other, it won't sound out of phase. My experience with many, many Les Pauls has told me some do the mod well, and others don't. Each guitar is, of course, different, except for Fadeds, which, in my experience with more than 180 of them, they ALL do the PG Mod almost dead on.

  • Fantastic playing. I could listen to this all night. Hello I believe I am LOL

Please send me a set of those pick ups

  • I really love your tone and playing. I have been watching this post constantly trying to learn what you are doing but the small screen is making me crazy! Would I be able to get a copy of this video on a dvd so that I can play it on a tv? Obviously, this is your work and I would bewilling to cover all costs as if this were a private guitar lesson. Which by the way, would not be a bad idea to market these videos as an in depth study.
