NOTE: This tutorial is based on the PS2 version of Rebirth, so obviously the controls will differ if you're playing the PSP port. Here are the controls for the PSP version finally since I kinda forgot about updating this. Oops.

Directional Pad/Analog Stick: Used for movement and highlighting a selection
Circle Button: Used for executing a Normal attack and for making a decision
X Button: Used for executing a Skill and for canceling an item
Triangle Button: Displays the battle menu screen (also used to return to the battle screen)
Square Button: Used to defend and to change your RG level when used with the Directional Pad/Analog Stick
L Button: Used to change your battle strategy when used with the Directional Pad/Analog Stick
R Button: Used to change targets when used with the Directional Pad/Analog Stick
Start Button: Used to jump (like you'll ever need to, but...)
Select Button: Used to change your battle mode (e.g. auto, semi-auto, and manual)

And this is just a suggestion, but I would recommend switching the buttons for jumping and changing your battle strategy since I find it to be a heck of a lot more intuitive that way, but whatever works for you.

This tutorial is intended for new Rebirth players or those who feel that their understanding of basic battle concepts is lacking. In other words, this is not a guide on how to own every boss in the game (although it will help you stay alive); rather, I'm hoping that it'll lead to a better appreciation of how kickass the battle system is for this game.

A quick summary of what's in this video:
Basic Controls
General Explanations for RG, FG, Ougis, and guarding
A brief snippet on the Force Cube

Notice that I use a LOT of text, so the pause button is your friend (if there's more than 4 lines of text, you will most likely have to pause it since I did a crappy job of incorporating enough battle "downtime"...unless you're a damn fast reader). And just so no one thinks that the AI is retarded in this game, I programmed Eugene and Mao so that they would basically stand there; it gets confusing when there are many bodies running around. And to clarify, no, you're not supposed to have this awesome arsenal of Ougis the minute that you step outside of Sulz...I bought those from the Grade Shop.

If this video is well-received, I may do some more that explain stuff such as Enhancing your equipment, Cooking, Technical Smashes, and all of that other fun, non-essential but extremely helpful activities in the world of Rebirth. In other words, make lots of comments, rate this bugger, or do something to let me know that it helped (or if it didn't help, give me some suggestions) or I'm just going to assume that I wasted my time. Well, not really, but you know what I mean, right?

And yes, I'm still working on translating the storyline so put that baseball bat down RIGHT NOW!

  • howd you get the battle menu in english?? O_o btw its me, AbsoluteZero9 from Gfaqs :D really helpful!

  • Huh, I didn't do anything...it's not showing up in English for you?

And welcome! Glad this was useful. ^^

  • Thanks for the video! It helped me with some of the battle mechanics. Even though I can understand a lot of Japanese, the battle system in Rebirth is really unique, so I didn't understand it all.

  • Yeah, that was actually one of the complaints when Rebirth first came out; people in Japan thought the game was too hard. In any case though, glad the vid helped clear some things up for you. ^^

  • NOW this video is very handy to watch!

    *Has the PSP Port*

Some things changed in the Port is pretty small, like the Jump is now set to the Start button.

  • Yeah, once my copy gets here, I gotta update the description. One of these days though, I'm actually gonna just redo the whole thing, but this will have to do for now. ^^

  • I have no idea how I'm going to remember all this... But at least I think I have the general gist. Time to get raped in the game :D

Double tap the control pad in the direction you want to run. That's how it is for the PS2 version.

  • Thanks man. I handled it OK in Japanese until I got to the OUGI part, that was a bit tricky. Much obliged!!

  • Third time watching these vids now... I just can't seem to get a handle on this damn battle system. Nor can I pull off the Lower one's rg > lower cost rg Ougi combo either...

  • I'm going to sound like a complete idiot for saying this but i just got the psp version of this game and i have no idea how to run. So how do you run? thanks :]

  • @madara33

If it's just the specific character refusing to attack, regardless of slot, it's a strategy setting problem (second line is attack frequency).

Whenever it only happens to one slot (as is your case), you've accidentally set that slot to Semi-Auto or Manual control, meaning it's assuming you want that slot to be controlled by a human. Make sure that slot is set to Auto so the AI controls the character in that slot, and not Semi-Auto or Manual, which are both human control settings.

  • @Mcaleerpx01

You can technically just set them all to Manual control as far as I'm aware (you might need a multitap and 4 controllers), but the easiest way is just to change their strategy setting.

To get everyone to defend, set the 2nd line in each character's strategy (Attack Frequency) to the first option (pretty sure it's the first choice), which causes them to defend. They'll run around and avoid enemies, but shouldn't attack or use any skills.

  • How can you get the other characters to do nothing but defend? Is there a way to set them to manual like in other Tales games?

  • Thank you so much for this. I was so lost before this. thank you.

  • I really appreciate this video, it's greatly improved the way I play the game even after having it for almost 3 years now. Having an understanding of how the system works helps to enjoy the game the way it was meant to be played; I really feel system wise this is the deepest Tales game.

  • really helpful both videos and guides, thanks~
