By request, here's a video demoing handwriting recognition on the Samsung Galaxy Note and the S-Memo application. It's not quite perfect and occasionally struggled with shorter words (e.g. is instead of if) and picking up the correct punctuation but on the whole works pretty well, even for an entire block of text.

  • You have strange "f" :D

Anyway - this is working just fine in my opinion, until you write down carefully. My question is - which is the fastest way to write something on Note, handwriting, swype or simple typing letter on virtual keyboard? Regards!

  • @XvallorX Personally I type a lot faster than I can handwrite so I find that a lot faster - although there are certain occasions when I think it's less fiddly to handwrite instead (e.g. when you're in a meeting, as you don't need to look at the phone as much when you handwrite). The fastest input mechanism is probably voice recognition though - I demoed this in my other video

    Go to about 7:54 :)

  • @kenstechtips I have watched it already :P As well as almost every single video of SGN on youtube :P. Thing is, I am from Poland, and my language is not so popular as English, and secondly - it is kind of hard language, so I don't know if it recognize some spelling. Anyway - thank you for the reply, Big regards!

  • @XvallorX Thanks for all of your comments and thoughts! Let me know if there are any other features of the Galaxy S II I can help to demo :) Ken

  • That's fantastic! Thanks for doing that! Seems like a great note taking device!

One question, can you use the handwriting recognition in any application or is it for S-memo only?

  • @kcour2006 Glad it's useful! The handwriting recognition will work in any application where you have a text input: there is a toggle on the keyboard between QWERTY keyboard and handwriting mode. The handwriting mode works in a similar way on the keyboard, except that it recognises the words as you go along rather than all at once at the end. I prefer the S-Memo way of doing it personally when making notes but the handwriting mode on keyboard is good for texts, etc. :) Ken

  • lol Douglas Adams.. The man... The genius

  • @unruler I find things like that annoying Great tech hindered by bad design.

  • ok the thing about scribe tech is flexibility.

You can not for instance type 'a paragraph on skin cells and then draw and label a skin cell' . From what I can see here there tech is there - but has it been implemented correctly?

This is the only thing right now that can persuade me to move away from hard keyboards.

@kenstechtips - problem with voice is the privacy. It's an option for a situation. But I think handwriting will be more useful for a few years - if not as popular.

  • @marshmallowhailstorm Hi! Yep this is indeed possible :) Have a look at my graph plotting video - I use text recognition to add labels to the graph and then everything else is free-form and handwritten!

You could do the same thing to enter a paragraph on skin cells and then you could draw it freehand.

  • Very strange, it seems that this recognition software doesn't even have spellchecker built in because it haven't recognized spaces between words and punctuation, and this is pretty easy to do with spellchecker.

  • Nice

  • @kcour2006 Hi and yes. Anywhere which accepts keyboard input. Whenever the keyboard is visible you can tap the [T] button access the handwriting pad.

Also, if you tap a text field with the pen it automatically opens the handwriting pad
