Ractopamine is a drug that is used as a feed additive to promote leanness in pigs raised for their meat. Pharmacologically, it is a beta-adrenoceptor agonist. It is the active ingredient in products known as Paylean for swine and Optaflexx for cattle, developed by Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, for use in food animals for growth promotion.
Ractopamine has been banned in the European Union, Taiwan and China.[1]

@Ed3891 Animals aren't people. If the pigs were miserable, they would get stressed and sick. If the pigs are healthy and stress free, then how can it be cruel? Just because it makes you feel sad? That is a silly thing to determine cruelty by. Look at how the pigs choose to be in the secure stall versus wandering free.

this is bullshit. My dad and I run a farm and have two buildings we contract pigs in, about 1,000 in each building. They give us these pigs that have genetic problems from these hormones they are supposedly not giving the pigs and they expect us to raise these gilts that weigh 40 pounds all the way up to 280-300 lbs. Hell we were taking truckloads of 16 dead pigs a week to be turned into fertilizer last round of pigs. We have been getting pigs that look more like fucking sheep they are so hairy!

All of you need to realize the benefits of being a farmer and how WE farmers sacrifice our lives and our own money to provide for YOU. As an FFA member, i strongly believe that at the end of the day, none of you will complain about the food we have provided for you for all your fancy dinners and lunches. We are the ones who support modern technology and 1 in 7 jobs are Ag based, so just fyi
