A bullet from a holdup caused this fellow to be paralyzed waist down. Since then, he painstakingly trained his Philippine canine, an "askal", coined from the local dialect which meant stray dog to help him go on with his life.
Everyday, he would go out to the streets on his home made cart unmindful of the hazards that confront him with the sheer determination to go on living.
Passersby out of compassion give alms to sustain him and his 'friend' who never ceases to stay with him, guide and lead him. Never complaining in spite of the difficult task and situation they are both in. WHAT A FRIEND INDEED!
The dog was trained to bite onto a piece of wood while they are out in the streets to allay fears that this 'friend' would bite. Also attached is a chain that this 'friend' pulls to help this fellow pedal his way through the use of his hands.
A true and faithful hero, this "askal" friend.
Kawawa naman yun. Naiyak ako :(
