Teachable Moment from IRIS
Magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred near Van Turkey (east Turkey) on October 23, 2011 was recorded by 3 seismic stations approximately 60, 90, and 120 degrees away: Greenland, Vinton IA, & Lemon Verde CHILE respectively.
The animations shows a cutaway of the globe to watch seismic ray paths travel through the earth to the 3 stations. Remember, at 120° the station is in the shadow zone, so does not record P or S waves, only PP (bounced once at the surface) and SS waves.
Ends with actual seismograms from the stations.
