@nolife45 Short version, oysters filter their food out of the water they're in. Sometimes they suck in some dirt, and this irritates their insides. To protect themselves, they extrete protective juices that are supposed to cover the offending mass so that it can be expelled. Sometimes but not always, this protective layer just sticks and keeps building, so the mass is stuck inside, and that forms a pearl. So a pearl is basically a speck of dirt wrapped in dried clam mucus.
