Audience Question: With all the different plans, why won't everyone choose the same plan? Dr. Hensel points out that everyone has different needs. Rep. Schiff agrees, and says that's why the goal of reform is to maximize choice -- which will also increase competition, thus lowering prices. (This is one in a series of videos by Doug Drenkow ( http://douglasdrenkow.com ) for http://OpEdNews.com from the Rep. Schiff town hall meeting, in Alhambra, CA, Aug. 11, 2009)

  • As Rep. Schiff cited in other clips, the study by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says that private insurance will actually grow, as everyone will be required to purchase health insurance (with subsidies based on income); and with competition from the low-overhead public option and bulk-purchasing power of the Exchange, private insurance rates will go down. And as the President pointed out in his town hall, reform will support the training of more doctors and nurses, already short.

  • Your employer will drop your current coverage for the public plan and many insurance companies will go out of business. Who can compete with a plan that doesn't have to show a profit? There will be a shortage of Doctors because less people will go into the profession. There will be no tort reform to protect doctors from being sued resulting in still higher costs. While other countries with socialized medicine don't allow that, our democrats love the trail lawyers and always support them.
