The Friends of the Broadway and the Broadway Players celebrate the start of the 8th season of community theatre in Mt Pleasant with Paul Rudnicks I Hate Hamlet, September 11, 2009.
I Hate hamlet is a comedy about Andrew, a washed-up TV heartthrob (Michael Negus) who buys an apartment once owned by the greatest Hamlet actor ever: John Barrymore. Andrews star-struck fiancé (Sara Hicks) thinks a séance would be fun; but its not fun for Andrew when he meets the Ghost of Barrymore (Joe Conrad)! And only Andy can see and hear the ghost.
Show times are September 11, 12, 18 & 19 at 7:00 pm and September 13 at 2 pm.
Other Broadway Players performing in the season opener at the Broadway are Judy Gibson, Rachel Foster-Lifson, and Mike Sobolewski.
Paul Rudnicks I Hate Hamlet! is a crisp and cunning tribute to the theatre world; it is meant to parody the life of those who love the stage, whether performer or patron! John Sidney Barrymore enjoyed a long, stalwart career spanning stage, silent film, the golden age of Hollywood, and the trials and tribulations of life. From illustrious actor, to a four- time failure at marriage, from the shining star of a family of crown jewels in the coronet of theatre, to a desperate alcoholic unable to perform, he showcased the extremes of the good and the bad in all of us.
Director Mike Meakin said, "I myself have played Barrymore twice in this production, and I cant emphasize enough the effect it had on my life; it truly cemented my love of theatre and my recognition that, no matter how much one achieves in ones life, the line between success and failure is not in what one does, but in how one is remembered.
