Councillor Richard Humphreys (Labour Party) carries out a devastating forensic demolition of Councillor Richard Boyd Barrett (Socialist Workers Party).

Background: Richard Boyd Barrett and his Socialist Workers Party are probably the strongest supporters in Ireland of global Islamist terror groups. They openly support Hamas and Hezbollah. Boyd Barrett attended a conference with the Iraqi Sunni "resistance" and Al-Sadr's Iraqi Shia death squads. He spoke at a conference of Islamic radicals where a speaker praised insurgents in Iraq and the Taliban in Afghanistan. He told attendees it was entirely legitimate to argue that Israel has no right to exist.

This is the first proper democratic smackdown Boyd Barrett has ever had. He has been shouting abuse in the street outside the Israeli and American embassies for 20 years, but has never been part of the give and take of democratic debate - since he was unable to get elected. Now he is an elected local councillor, and he is forced, for the first time, to listen to hard criticism to his face.

Richard Humphreys is from the rational left, holding to the values of the Western Enlightenment against the postmodern "multicultural" error that would see religious violence and fanaticism as "understandable" if it comes from non-western peoples. Humphreys challenged Boyd Barrett to condemn Hamas, Hezbollah, the Iraqi insurgents, the Taliban or indeed any Islamist terror group. Boyd Barrett declined to condemn them.

@padraigdublin95 Silly. And if America supports Israel because it has a right to exist, then they should pay reparations to Native Americans and give them back their land. But we don't like to bring up matters such as the Americans exterminating the Indian Race and Thomas Jefferson being a filthy imperialist. So Israel has a right to exist because of God or people who were there 2,000 years ago? What other excuse have you got that doesn't involve an imperial power saying they have a right?
