Jack Gerstner, a Columbia local, launched his art gallery, Gallery 701, in 1996. Located in the historic Olympia mill village, the building on Whaley Street hosted numerous art, music and cultural programs and performances. In 2000, after a major rain storm, over 10,000 square feet of the building's roof collapsed. Gerstner sold the building in 2006 but still tries to remain active in the local community by planning cultural events under the Gallery 701 name.
