Recently I moved next to a Value Village and a Radioshack, so the circuit bending has commenced.

On a trip last week I found an older 'V-Tech alphabet picture desk' which is more or less a Speak and Spell clone made by an AT&T partner.

Upon opening it up I found a great deal of analog circuitry and was excited at the possibilities. One of my first bends was a keeper. It sort of 'scrabbles' the sound and confuses the whole system with glitches.

I had never even heard of this device before, but it is quite a gem for circuit bending.

Interestingly enough, as you can see in the video, the same bend that frankensteins the sound also messes with the LCD display, causing jittery and mangled images to ghost in at random intervals.

And so, with a single momentary switch you can logically glitch the graphics and sound.

I have noticed a few strange things about it's behavior when under the influence. For instance at 1:27 you can see it try to spell the word triangle, leaving out the 'rian' part, leaving 'T gle'.

Also, it occasionally interjects with 'Lets play some music' or 'colors and shapes'.

Thanks for watching, I hope you like it.

  • i have this

  • 0:35-0:38 it sounds like it says INXS...LOL.

  • 0:22-0:25-LOL and of all iv'e seen here on youtube of circuit bending V-Tech toy computers, this is funny as heck.

  • I didn't know these units had bending potential, until I watched this video. The, Hello, versions of Lady Who Swallowed a fly, If You're Happy, Twinkle Twwinkle, and Wheels on the Bus that the unit spats out in this vid are actually kind of cute. Also, I myself am not a bender, but a toy collector, having owned one of these between 1997 and 2004.

  • How many modification switches did you install in that thing? I see from the keyboard that it has both upper and lower case letters as well as the pictures, so if it has the whole alphabet on it then it must be a fairly large device. It's interesting that I hear it playing music after it says "Bye bye", so it might be advisable to remove the batteries when not in use.

  • It sounds like it's trying to play twinkle twinkle little star but it can't quite do it.

  • at around 0:37 there is a ?. it is so fitting for it!

  • Let's *grlrlrlree*! Press a button. LOL

Nice job bending that toy. If I would buy any bent toy, I would buy a VTech. Thanks!

  • fololololololololll!

  • Let's *sgrlrlrl* Push the button. lol
